The Woodlawn Cemetery Presents:
A Reading, Talk, & Book Signing with Author & Journalist Alix Strauss,
THE JOY OF FUNERALS - 20th ANNIVERSARY EDITION
SUNDAY, JUNE 14 AT 2:00 PM
THE WOOLWORTH CHAPEL
Join award-winning journalist and author of the novel, The Joy of Funerals, for an enlightening and intriguing talk, reading, Q&A and book signing in the Woolworth Chapel at The Woodlawn Cemetery. The cult classic novel was recently re-released in celebration of its 20th anniversary and has been highlighted by Oprah’s Book Club and Katie Couric, among numerous publications and TV segments.
The Joy of Funerals centers around Nina, a lonely, single, thirty-something Manhattanite who attends other people’s funerals. She goes in the hope of connecting with the mourners, and to fill the deep emptiness in her life. Along the way she meets eight other just as disconnected women at the funerals she attends, each coping with loss. Stories and characters connect and overlap, while Nina's quest to belong deepens. Written with wit, mordant humor and a uniquely penetrating voice--and described by the Los Angeles Times as “part ‘Six Feet Under,’ part ‘Sex and the City,’”--Alix has turned the spotlight on the unattractive subjects of grief and loneliness.
This event is free to attend, and registration is required. If you are interested in learning more about Alix and The Joy of Funerals, please visit: alixstrauss.com. After the event and reception, please join us for a trolley tour of the cemetery.
