Eric K. Washington is an independent historian and author. The eponymous subject of his award-winning biography, Boss of the Grips: The Life of James H. Williams and the Red Caps of Grand Central Terminal, is one of our Harlem notables on this tour. His book won the Herbert H. Lehman Prize, the GANYC Apple Award and was a special finalist for the Brendan Gill Prize; it also inspired a movement in Victor Goines’s 2021 jazz opus, The Woodlawn Suite.
