The Tiffany Trail Walking Tour
Color, artistry, brilliant glass: these are the things that come to mind when we think of Tiffany Studios. Few of us are aware that funerary art created by the firm’s artists and artisans within its Ecclesiastical Department produced memorials from headstones to mausolea, incorporating all of the decorative arts for which they were famed. The techniques Louis Comfort Tiffany and his staff utilized in creating art glass, mosaics and stone work derived from his unparalleled capacity to infuse artworks with singular and often striking effects of light, hue and texture.
Among its treasures, Woodlawn arguably contains the largest repository of Tiffany Studios’ funerary art in the world. The Cemetery holds wonderful stained glass, bronze work, mosaic ornaments and architecture designed and created by them, always at the highest level of artisanry. Join us on a walking tour to explore Louis Comfort Tiffany’s development from painter to designer, the cultural movements that influenced him and the unique evolution of his company’s capacities in the decorative arts.
The tour will be led by Woodlawn Volunteer and Architectural Historian Anthony Pellino.
